A Delhi University student was left in distress following an Uber driver’s cancellation of her ride after making her wait for 40 minutes. The incident reportedly occurred in Delhi’s Kalkaji area around 8 pm on February 4. The woman highlighted that despite the application showing that the driver had arrived at the pick-up spot, she neither spotted the cab nor received any response to her continuous calls.
Taskin Zafar, who booked the cab for a trip to Noida, recounted that she initially went to the pickup location after receiving confirmation from the driver. However, she could not find the driver.
She said, “The driver wasn’t cancelling the ride or answering calls, keeping me stranded in an unsafe situation,” during an interview with The Hindustan Times.
Further, she claimed that the situation got worse when a drunk man started following her. Fearing for her safety, she remained cautious while trying to contact Uber support services.
After 40 minutes, the driver, identified as Anish, finally cancelled the ride. Trautamised by the experience, the student lodged a formal complaint against the driver through Uber’s app-based grievance system.
“I had to keep waiting outside on the main road for 45 mins after which a drunk man came and harassed me,” Taskin wrote in the complaint.
After the complaint, Uber replied, “Users should never be made to feel uncomfortable during a trip using the app, and we expect all drivers and riders to remain respectful while using the Uber app. We can understand how the experience you’ve described was unsettling, please note that an expert from our safety team will soon be in touch with you to follow up and address your concern.”
The incident comes a month after another Delhi-based woman complained of a horrifying experience with Ola that made her ‘run for her life’. Sharing her ordeal on social media, she claimed that the driver slowed down the cab after a toll. Shortly after, he pulled over when two men gestured for him to stop.
As per the woman, the driver did not reply when she asked him the reason and said that it was regarding a pending loan. She became further scared when two more men approached the vehicle. “Feeling unsafe, I opened the right-side door and ran for my life. It was an extremely traumatic experience, and I cannot emphasize enough how terrified I felt,” she said in her post.
The woman also complained that the SOS button on Ola did not work.
