Once the pride of royal stables, the majestic Kathiawadi horse continues to command awe and admiration, not just in Gujarat but far beyond its native terrain. In a remarkable testament to the enduring legacy and rising demand for this regal breed, a horse breeder from Junagadh has sold one of his prized stallions for a whopping Rs 11.51 lakh to a buyer in Bihar.

The horse, an 11-year-old named Prithviwas bred and raised by local horse enthusiast Rajubhai Rada, who has devoted his life to preserving and promoting the Kathiawadi lineage. Speaking to Local 18, Rajubhai shared his lifelong passion for horses, a legacy passed down from his father. “Horses are like family to me,” he said. “We take care of them not just as animals, but as companions steeped in tradition.”

The Kathiawadi horse, known for its distinct curved ears, endurance, and graceful gait, has a history as rich as its appearance. Once favoured by Maharajas and Nawabs for both battle and ceremonial purposes, the breed is now gaining renewed attention among equine aficionados across the country. What was once a symbol of royal prestige is now sought after by breeders and racers alike.

Rajubhai’s stallion Prithvi, now en route to Patna, was purchased by a prominent horse breeder from Bihar, who aims to use the stallion to strengthen the bloodline and promote the Kathiawadi breed. “This isn’t just about a purchase,” Rajubhai explained. “It’s about carrying forward a legacy. The fact that someone is willing to pay more than what most would spend on a luxury car shows the growing respect for Kathiawadi horses.”

To ensure a safe and stress-free journey, a specially equipped ambulance has been arranged for Prithviwho will take four days to reach his new home. Such careful arrangements underscore the value and reverence with which these animals are treated by their caretakers.

Interestingly, while demand for the Kathiawadi breed is soaring in other states, their presence in Gujarat – their land of origin – has dwindled. Once commonly seen in villages and royal processions, these horses are now a rarity even in Kathiawad, the region from which they derive their name.
