Kate Middleton has shared her thoughts on Prince William’s new beard, a look that has been turning heads since last summer. While she didn’t outright criticise it, her response hinted that she might not be entirely convinced about the change. According to a report in People, during her St. Patrick’s Day visit to the Wellington Barracks in London, the Princess of Wales spoke about her husband’s facial hair while chatting with section commanders.

“These trends come and go. I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for,” she said.

While Kate didn’t say much about it, a former royal aide gave a more straightforward take in an interview with 60 Minutes Australia earlier this year. He suggested that William wouldn’t have kept the beard if his wife had objected.

“If she didn’t like it, it wouldn’t be there. I could tell you that,” Knauf said.

The couple’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, had a much stronger reaction when William first grew a beard. The 9-year-old didn’t like it at all and made that very clear.

Speaking at an event in South Africa last November, William said, “Well, Charlotte didn’t like it the first time. I got floods of tears, the first one I got tears, so I had to shave it off.”

Eventually, he managed to change her mind. “I thought, ‘Hang on a second.’ And I convinced her it was going to be okay,” he added.

When a reporter commented that William’s beard made him look more “relaxed,” he disagreed.

“Interestingly, you say that, because I couldn’t be less relaxed this year, so it’s very interesting you’re all seeing that,” he said. In the past year, both Kate and King Charles were diagnosed with cancer.

“But it’s more a case of just crack on, and you’ve got to keep going,” he added.

It isn’t the first time William has experimented with facial hair. He previously had a beard in 2008, though it didn’t last long. His brother, Prince Harry, on the other hand, has kept one for nearly a decade.

Beards even became a point of disagreement between the two brothers. In his memoir Spare, Harry revealed that he had to ask Queen Elizabeth for permission to keep his facial hair for his 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle. She approved but William wasn’t happy about it.

“Willy always thought Granny had a soft spot for me. That she indulged me while holding him to an impossibly high standard. Because… Heir, Spare, etc. It irked him,” Harry wrote.

William when pushed Harry again for clean shave look, Harry said, “For the love of God, Willy, why does this matter so much to you?”

“Because I wasn’t allowed to keep my beard,” his brother replied.
