A debate over hiring has erupted in Karnataka after a man’s blunt statement reignited the long-standing Kannadigas vs. Outsiders discussion. His blunt, no-nonsense advice to Karnataka’s employers has triggered a storm of reactions, some supportive and others vehemently against it. The now-viral post was shared on the social platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The user, who identifies as a Kannadiga, appealed to fellow locals to prioritise hiring people from Karnataka if they are in a position to do so.

“Dear Kannadigas, if you are in a position to hire a resource, give priority to Kannadigas. Kannadigas have talent/skills but we lack an ecosystem/group. How long are we going to fight in the streets for jobs in our own city while we should be doing on the ground? Be ruthless and hire Kannadigas,” the post read.

The post didn’t take long to draw significant backlash, especially from users who accused the man of promoting regional discrimination in the workplace. Many users voiced concern about the divisive nature of such sentiments, arguing that businesses should prioritise talent, not regional origin.

One user expressed frustration, pointing out that the focus should be on skills and expertise, not where someone comes from. “Companies need skills and talent and if they start fostering regional biases, they won’t survive in the long run,” they remarked. Others criticised the growing trend of dividing people based on regional lines. “First, it was religion. Then caste. Now language. What’s next? Are we going to fight over the colour of our clothes?” one user commented.

A particularly sharp response came from someone questioning whether the poster’s advice could lead to an absurd outcome, like creating a Kannadiga-specific version of LinkedIn. “So now you’ll start a Kannadiga version of LinkedIn? Before you get ruthless, maybe try some common sense. I’m starting my firm in Bangalore, and the only thing that matters is hiring people who are committed to working,” they wrote.

Not everyone was against the call to hire locally, but many felt that the key to success in business lies in talent, regardless of where it comes from. One user argued, “Dear Kannadigas, if you are in a position to hire anyone, please give preference to talent. It’s the talent that will help both you and your organisation thrive. Don’t fall into the trap of regionalism. History has shown that when talent is sidelined for regional considerations, the organisation will suffer.”
