A Karnataka man has accused a doctor from a Mangaluru hospital of leaving a surgical mop inside his wife’s stomach following a C-section delivery. It has led to severe complications for the woman, causing her excruciating pain, hindering her ability to breastfeed their newborn baby, and causing infection in her lungs and other organs.
Recently, the farmer and trader Gagandeep shared this harrowing incident on X (formerly Twitter).
In his lengthy post, Gagandeep revealed, “DR Anil S, Puttur City Hospital has made a C-section for my wife on 27-11-2024 and discharged her on 2-12-2024. But after a week, she got a high fever of 104* for 3-4 days & immediately approached the above doctor & hospital.”
Elaborating, he said that his wife told him about an unusual sensation on one side of his stomach. Concerned about this, the couple insisted on an ultrasound scan, which showed a 10 cm mass, but the radiologist allegedly refused to disclose its details to them. The doctor dismissed the concerns, stating that it was a hematoma and not a foreign object.
As the discomfort persisted, they sought a CT scan for further clarity, but the doctor reportedly said the condition would resolve over time. With the medicines prescribed by the doctor, the woman’s fever subsided, but the follow-up ultrasounds showed no reduction in the mass, and the woman started experiencing severe joint, leg and wrist pain, making it difficult for her to walk, stand, or even lift her baby to feed.
Her husband again rushed to the hospital, and this time they asked to check with an orthopaedist. Following this, they were referred to a higher hospital & arthritis specialist. The CT scan confirmed Gossypiboma and the presence of a surgical mop in the stomach. By then, the infection had spread to her lungs, blood, and other organs, putting her life at risk. When they approached the doctor showing the CT scan, he allegedly refused to accept his mistake.
it was massive in size as well. After getting the report I showed to Dr Anil but he was never ready to accept the mistake ,but told cant say anything & still it will be hematoma & he will get to know when operated!— Gagandeep.B (@deepubangaradka) February 21, 2025
At last, an emergency surgery was conducted at another private hospital in Puttur on January 25, and the surgical mop was successfully removed. The patient was discharged on February 15, though she is still under medication and has not been able to breastfeed her infant.
The husband expressed, “We have undergone tremendous stress. We have posted the issue on the National Consumer Grievance portal and the Department of Consumer Affairs. We have spent lakhs on her treatment.”
“But when I asked my wife, me and two small children suffered heavily for months. Newborn infants suffered without his rights of breastfeeding, me being a small farmer lost my crops by not being able to irrigate in this peak summer time, our mental agony, stress, social stress, physical pains, and loss of hopes & trust. How can one value an infant’s loss of breast milk?” he added.
According to The Times of India, District Health and Family Welfare Officer HR Thimmaiah announced that a six-member team of officials and doctors would investigate the case. He added that the probe should be completed within a week, with a report submitted to the Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare for further action.
