Jyeshtha is the third month in the Hindu calendar and marks the peak of summer. This period is closely associated with the Sun—symbolizing brightness, energy, and vitality.
According to religious beliefs, acts of penance, worship, and charity performed during Jyeshtha yield amplified spiritual benefits. Deeds such as offering water to the thirsty and helping those in need are considered especially virtuous.
A unique tradition observed during this month involves seeking the blessings of the eldest son or daughter by gifting them specific auspicious items. This practice is believed to support the child’s growth and bring prosperity and harmony to the entire family.
Bhopal-based astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma shares five items considered especially lucky to gift your eldest child during Jyeshtha:
Copper Utensils
Jyeshtha is the time when the Sun’s influence is at its peak, and copper—a metal associated with the Sun—is believed to harness and balance that energy. Gifting copper utensils such as a lota or glass to your elder child is said to boost their confidence. Scientifically, water stored in copper vessels helps reduce heat-related stress and improves digestion, making this tradition beneficial both spiritually and physically.
Red-Coloured Clothes
Red is a colour of energy, leadership, and positivity. As it is also linked to the Sun, gifting a clean, new red garment—such as a kurta, dupatta, or t-shirt—to your eldest child during Jyeshtha is considered auspicious. It is believed to enhance their confidence and leadership abilities.
Wheat
Wheat holds significant importance among grains and is symbolically connected to the Sun. Offering wheat or wheat-based sweets like laddus or halwa to your eldest child is believed to invite prosperity into the home. Encouraging them to perform good deeds with it further amplifies its positive impact.
Jaggery
Symbolizing sweetness and emotional bonding, jaggery is regarded as highly auspicious during Jyeshtha. Gifting jaggery or sweets made from it—such as chakki or gajak—to your eldest son or daughter is said to strengthen emotional resilience and deepen familial ties.
Fruits
Given the intense summer heat, hydration is essential. Seasonal fruits like mangoes, melons, and watermelons help cool the body and promote well-being. Offering these to your elder child not only supports their health but also enhances planetary harmony, contributing to overall family happiness and peace.
In essence, these symbolic offerings during Jyeshtha serve as meaningful gestures that align tradition, spirituality, and wellness—strengthening both individual growth and family unity.
