Harvard University is the latest target of the Trump administration which has refused to back down on its demands regarding the university’s hiring practices, admissions procedures and academic curriculum. As a result, Harvard is now facing the threat of losing its tax-exempt status and a $2.2 billion funding freeze with layoffs and stop-work orders expected. Despite this, the university has stood its ground and received support from political figures and activist groups.
In the midst of this, former President Joe Biden made a public appearance at Harvard which drew attention due to a series of gaffes. The event was held at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) as part of an Institute of Politics (IOP) seminar. It was attended by 50 students and was an off-the-record gathering. During the seminar, Biden celebrated Harvard’s decision to stand strong against the Trump administration. He told the students in attendance, “Harvard stepped up in a way no one else has. You should be thankful,” he said, according to The Harvard Crimson.
Biden further praised the university’s actions, saying, “I think Harvard should just do what it’s doing — lifting everybody.”

But his visit didn’t go without awkward moments. At the event, Biden confused Ukraine with Iraq while discussing Russia’s invasion. Mike Donilon, a former White House senior adviser, corrected him, as per the publication. In another moment, Biden took a bite of an ice cream bar but it fell to the floor.
Outside the event, roughly a dozen protesters condemned Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza at a demonstration organised by Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine.
They chanted “Biden, Biden, you can’t hide. You’re committing genocide” and tried to disrupt the event with bells and drums.
“We are here to protest the arrival of yet another genocidaire onto our campus, particularly the president, who gave billions and billions of dollars of support to Israel,” Olivia G. Pasquerella ’26, a Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee group organiser, said as quoted by the publication.
Biden’s appearance added to a growing wave of support for Harvard with figures like former President Barack Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders backing the university’s stance.
But a recent report in The New York Times claimed that the April 11 letter with the demands sent by the officials was “unauthorised.” A Donald Trump official contacted Harvard to claim that the letter had been sent in error.
The report, citing two individuals with knowledge of the matter, stated the letter was sent by Sean Keveney, the acting general counsel at the Department of Health and Human Services. He is also part of the antisemitism task force.
