In today’s highly competitive job market, candidates must be mentally prepared for rejections while applying for positions. While it’s crucial for applicants to not take rejection personally and maintain a positive outlook, interviewers also play a role in softening the blow by providing constructive feedback in an encouraging tone. A job seeker recently shared a screenshot of a rejection email that took an unexpected approach—comparing him to iconic figures like Lady Gaga, Bill Gates, and NBA legend Michael Jordan.
In an apparent attempt to soften the rejection, the email encouraged the applicant to stay positive despite the setback. The individual had applied for a Customer Service Manager position but was not selected. Instead, they received an unexpected response from the company—one that left them more disappointed than reassured.
“Please know we appreciate your background and your interest! We know the job search can feel daunting, and the path to finding your new role can be littered with no’s. So, while we recognise this is a no, we hope you can see that it’s one step closer to finding your yes!” the email read further, citing the names of Michael Jordan, who was cut from the high school basketball team; Lady Gaga, who was dropped from her first record; Bill Gates, whose first company failed; and others.
The unimpressed applicant took a jibe at the company’s “dumbest rejection email”, stating that it was an “unsolicited inspirational speech” from the HR and added, “Thank you, random HR person, for lumping me in with these wildly successful billionaires. I now understand that my path to success hinges on reading LinkedIn job postings.”
Social media users also wasted no time chiming in and sharing their reactions. A user joked, “Wow… I was so bummed about you losing THE dream job until I saw Vera Wang failed at skating but created a fashion label. Take this as inspiration to fail, babe!” While another added, “3 days ago: Complaining that rejection email was too many words, 2 days ago Complaining, a rejection email just said no. Today, the complaint is that the rejection email has too many words. Very fickle bunch in this sub.”
After calling out the company for its rejection email, the applicant made sure to mention landing another job—mocking the former employer for missing out on the “best” Customer Success Manager.
