A troubling video from Jharkhand has drawn attention online, showing school children using a bamboo ladder to climb over a broken section of a collapsed bridge. The clip highlights the risks students are taking just to attend school in the absence of a safe route.

In the footage, children are seen carefully walking along a damaged bridge. With help from nearby adults, they manage to cross a gap. As they move ahead, they reach the part of the bridge that has completely collapsed. To get across, the students climb a makeshift bamboo ladder placed by villagers and continue their journey on foot.

“Children walk on a damaged road and use a bamboo ladder to climb up a collapsed bridge to reach their school,” read the caption of the video shared by ANI.

The incident took place in Khunti district. As reported by Live Hindustan, the bridge was located over the Banai river at Pelaul village along the Khunti–Torpa main road. It collapsed after heavy rainfall on June 19. This caused a cut off of direct connection between Khunti and several nearby locations, including Simdega and parts of Odisha.

Since the collapse, vehicles on the Khunti–Torpa–Simdega route have been using a longer alternative. Villages such as Mahil, Jamtoli, Hesel, Pelaul, Bichna and Jurdag have been affected. For students from these areas, getting to school has become a daily challenge.

As per the report, children from Hesel, Mahil, Jamtoli and Pelaul now take a 12-kilometre detour through Mahil, Ganaloya Ghaghra, Bandhtoli and Saridkel to reach schools in Bichna. Parents who own two-wheelers are managing to transport their children but many families have no vehicle at all. In those cases, students have been seen crossing the damaged bridge using the temporary bamboo ladder installed by locals.

“It has come to our notice (that children are climbing a bamboo ladder to cross the bridge). The concerned officers have been ordered to ensure that such an incident does not take place again. The bamboo ladder has also been removed. We will implement all the safety measures,” Incharge SDO Arvind Ojha told ANI.

“We have prepared an alternative route. We are also working to make it a double-lane road. We hope that the work will be completed within 2–3 days, and vehicular movement will begin,” he added.

Live Hindustan also reported that even 15 days after the collapse, the construction of a diversion route had not started. Officials said that an estimate for the work has been prepared and sent for approval. Once it is cleared, the diversion construction will begin.
