From the bustling town of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, an inspiring story of a young man has caught the internet, grabbing much praise over his hard work and resilience. Against all the financial and family challenges, the boy managed to clear NEET-UG—one of the most difficult exams meant for admissions to undergraduate medical courses in India. Rohit Kumar, who earns his livelihood by selling mobile phone covers on the streets of Jamshedpur, now aspires to find a seat at a government college in Jharkhand.
A video of Rohit’s meeting with Physics Wallah founder and CEO Alakh Pandey is going viral, where the latter personally visited his shop. Rohit was a student of the Ummeed Batch—a special initiative by Physics Wallah. The video opens to show Pandey congratulating Rohit with a warm hug over his achievement. The boy goes on to recall his journey, sharing that he used to work in a shop in the morning and then study at night.
In another video, Pandey goes on to gift a white coat to Rohit, extending him best wishes for his dreams of becoming a doctor. Despite the odds, the boy scored an impressive 549 in NEET 2025, with an All India Rank (AIR) of 12,484, as per Livemint.
Rohit’s journey wasn’t an easy one from the beginning. His father used to work in a local vegetable market. After completing his Class 12 board exams, he had to drop out of college to prepare for the NEET exams. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that the boy worked at a medical store, which inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. “I used to work all day selling phone covers and study till 3 am. Then again, I would wake up at 7 AM and go back to work,” he told Alakh Pandey in one of the videos.
Internet users instantly flooded the comment section with praise and words of appreciation. One wrote, “You make us proud,” while another added, “This is the real inspiration.”
