A zoo in Japan has banned solo male visitors after repeated incidents of harassment towards its female owner and some women guests. The director of the zoo, known online as Misa Mama, announced the new rule on social media. According to a report by South China Morning Post (SCMP), men can now only enter if they are accompanied by family or friends. “Effective immediately, male visitors are prohibited from entering the zoo alone,” she stated.
Misa Mama explained that the zoo, called Healing Pavilion, in Tochigi Prefecture, was designed to provide comfort and emotional healing through interactions with animals. Visitors can spend time with animals such as dogs, cats, pigs and sheep. However, some men visiting alone had made inappropriate comments, tried to start conversations with women or engaged in flirtatious behaviour.
“This rule isn’t based on arrogance or a misunderstanding of men. Too many have come with harmful intentions, causing me significant stress. I feel as if my heart is in pain,” she said.
Miss Mama also defended her policy, making it clear that the zoo is meant for emotional healing rather than dating or matchmaking. She shared that, as the owner, it was difficult to openly reject such visitors. Mama shared that she often felt pressured to stay polite and smile even in uncomfortable situations. The stress from these repeated encounters kept building up and eventually, she decided that enforcing this rule was the only way to feel safer. Now, a notice at the zoo entrance clearly informs visitors that men must come with family or friends to enter.
Since its opening last March, Healing Pavilion has been a place where families and couples come to bond with animals. The facility also features a dog park where visitors are welcome to bring their pets.
Her announcement has led to mixed reactions. While many people supported her decision, others argued that it was unfair. One male commenter wrote, “This is blatant gender discrimination. Many individuals like me simply wish to enjoy the company of animals alone and mean no harm.”
In response to the backlash, Misa Mama stated, “If I could, I would only prohibit those who misbehave. But as a woman managing the zoo alone, I fear potential retaliation, leaving me no choice but to enforce this rule.”
One person also mentioned, “I hope only genuine animal-lovers visit. I believe animals can sense those with ill intentions.”
Another added, “Thank you to the animals at Healing Pavilion for bringing me warmth and joy. Misa Mama is facing difficulties; let us protect this zoo together.”
Some people urged authorities to implement policies that safeguard female employees and visitors. So far, local officials have not commented on the situation and it remains unclear if an investigation into the harassment allegations will take place.
