Scams in the Delhi Metro are nothing new. We have often heard cases involving passengers getting duped by scammers, such as victims losing money while trying to recharge their cards or while financially helping the needy ones to reach their homes safely. Well, something like that recently happened with a woman while travelling via the Delhi Metro, which left her more hurt than the money lost.
The event occurred on September 2, around 5 p.m., while she was changing from the Pink Line to the Blue Line at the Mayur Vihar Metro station.
Woman Gets Scammed At Delhi Metro
Taking to Reddit, a user shared that while she was walking towards the Blue Line metro, a middle-aged man approached her and requested some cash to reach home safely. “He spoke English fluently and informed me that his phone was dead, he didn’t have any cash, and he needed some to travel home. He promised to transfer the money online if I helped him. I actually didn’t have any cash, so he requested me to pay a shopkeeper standing in front of the escalator, promising to get cash from him,” the user wrote.
She added that he then requested her to give Rs 80 to a nearby merchant, claiming he would collect the money straight from him. ‘I was exhausted that day after travelling with big baggages, so I just paid. “The shopkeeper handed him the money,” she explained.
But what happened next left her shocked. “He pulled out his phone, which he had previously stated was dead, and got my number. He added that he owned a business and that his daughter would send the money. Somehow, I trusted him when he mentioned his daughter,” she wrote. However, no transfer was made from his side.
The Incident Came As A Lesson
Moving ahead, the woman shared how being kind can make you feel terrible. She added, “It’s not about Rs 80. To be honest, it would sting even if the amount was merely Rs 10. I love to assist others and try to give back wherever possible. Being taken advantage of because you are kind makes you feel bad.”
She concluded the post writing, “So, lesson learnt: not everyone who appears genuine is honest. And it’s unfortunate that little scams like these make people more unwilling to help individuals in genuine need.”
How Did Social Media React
As soon as they shared the post, several others also shared their own experiences of being scammed in the Delhi Metro. A user wrote, “I once had an incident with the same kind of guy in Hauz Khas metro station, and I dialled the metro emergency number saying ‘CISF waale aapki zyada madad karenge.’ All of a sudden, the individual had a metro card and left the station.”
Another one shared, “The same scam happened to me at Kalkaji Mandir; however, that guy bought food costing 130 and took cash worth 100. He promised to return it on the same day, but it’s been more than two months.”
One person shared, “When I was new to Delhi, I had the exact same experience at Okhla Bird Sanctuary. A guy claimed he was a student who had lost his money and was about to give an exam. Thankfully, I just had around Rs 50 with me. These are lessons learnt.”
A comment reads, “I just ignore strangers asking for any sort of financial help.”
Instances like these are not new. Earlier in July, a user shared his experience of a scammer trying to dupe her for Rs 570 at the Rajiv Chowk metro station, claiming he works at Capegemini.
