In a post that ignited widespread discussion on social media, a young woman laid bare the stark contrast between her life in India and that of her cousin living in the United Kingdom. The candid account, shared in the Reddit community @r/nri by an user named BubblyDamage4746offers a deeply personal lens into a subject many Indians silently ponder: is life truly better abroad?

The two cousins, now both 21 years old, spent their early childhood together in India. But at age 14, one moved to the UK with her family, settling in Wales, while the other remained in Gujarat. Despite the physical distance, the bond between them has endured, with regular video calls and heartfelt exchanges keeping their relationship strong.

In her post, the Gujarat-based cousin recounts how, though both she and her cousin had similar academic trajectories – average students with ambitions of pursuing engineering – their paths diverged sharply after the move. She scored 86% in her Class 12 board exams, enough to secure admission to a middling college where she took up electrical engineering. But from there, the struggle began.

Finding a good internship proved challenging. Her most recent stint demanded 10-hour workdays for a meager stipend of Rs 12,000 per month. She described being weighed down by academic pressure, looming assignments, and the emotional toll of repeatedly being reminded that she failed to crack the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Even job prospects looked bleak – salaries for freshers in her field rarely exceeded Rs 20,000, according to her post. Social restrictions also played a role in her daily life; she noted that her family doesn’t allow her to travel alone, citing safety concerns for women in the country.

The real shock came when she described her cousin’s life in the UK. Studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bath, her cousin had already completed two well-paid internships with standard 8-hour workdays. She even received an offer from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), an opportunity she respectfully declined in favour of staying in the UK.

As part of the F1 student club at her university, she has travelled across Europe, visiting countries like Hungary, Italy, and France – experiences that seem worlds apart from her cousin’s day-to-day reality in Gujarat.

The Reddit post struck a chord with thousands. Comments poured in – some empathising, others critiquing, but all acknowledging the undeniable gap in opportunities, exposure, and quality of life. Toward the end of her reflection, the young woman admitted what many in India quietly fear but rarely voice – that life in the UK was better.
