Hokkaido, a beautiful island in Japan, is famous for its snowy landscapes and wild nature, which attracts people from all over the world. But recently, one special bird from the island has been getting a lot of attention online.

The bird, called the Shima Enaga, has been nicknamed the Japanese snow fairy because of its tiny size and fluffy white feathers. It belongs to the long-tailed bushtit family and is one of the smallest birds in Japan, measuring only about 14 cm or 5.5 inches long.

With its round eyes, fluffy body and cute appearance, the Shima Enaga has become popular among bird lovers and locals in Hokkaido.

As per the Instagram page, “Known as the Japanese snow fairy, this tiny bird is a subspecies of the long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus) with a unique charm that made it go viral on social media. With its snow-white feathers, round shape, and innocent expression, it’s considered one of the most adorable creatures in the world. It lives in the cold forests of Japan, moving in small flocks and making soft calls as it hops between branches.”

Reacting to the post, a user wondered, “Why does Japan get all the cute animals?”

Another hilariously shared, “In Australia, everything is metal and in Japan, everything is cute.”

“Oh my god. What a fluffy little bird,” a comment read.

An individual explained, “It’s so small and cute like a fairy, so we all love it very much. But because they are wild birds, we can’t raise them. If you meet them, you can get a lot of happiness from them. They are happy birds that Japan is proud of.”

Another mentioned, “Protect the bird at all costs.”

One more added, “Even the birds in Japan look Japanese.”

One of the best places to see Shima Enaga in Hokkaido is the Bird-Watching Cafe. But finding and clicking pictures of these birds isn’t always easy. They are very small and don’t come close to people, which makes them hard to spot.

Aaron Kemp, who is from Australia, runs this cafe, especially for bird lovers and photographers. The cafe is located just outside Chitose City in Hokkaido. Visitors come here with hopes of seeing the snow fairy and other local birds. Even if the birds decide to stay hidden, guests can still relax and enjoy ice cream or sweet treats at the cafe while they wait.
