In recent weeks, a fun and creative trend has taken over social media, with users transforming their photos into different artistic styles. It all began with the Ghibli wave, where people reimagined their everyday pictures as dreamy scenes inspired by Studio Ghibli films. Riding on its popularity, others soon followed suit, experimenting with what their photos might look like in The Simpsons universe or even as quirky Muppet characters.

Amid the wave of social media style trends, OpenAI introduced a new twist — this time, it’s all about pets. The feature allows pet owners to upload photos of their cats or dogs and ask ChatGPT to describe what their furry companions might look like as humans. While the idea quickly gained traction, it has also sparked backlash. Some users have accused the tool of racial bias after noticing that several black-furred pets were rendered as white humans in the AI-generated images.

The controversy started after ChatGPT posted about the trend on Instagram. People were invited to try it out by uploading pet photos and asking for a human version. “Want to see what your pets would look like if they were a person? Making images in Chat is free and available to everyone. Just upload a photo and ask: Show me what my pet would look like as a human. Pro Tip: Feel free to add attributes you’d like to see or personality traits about your pet to get a really good one!” the post read.

ChatGPT’s post also featured screenshots from users who had already tested the feature and shared their results on X (formerly Twitter). While many found the concept entertaining, some users pointed out a concerning pattern — in at least three separate posts, black-furred pets were depicted as white humans, raising questions about the AI’s handling of race and representation.

Several users raised concerns and began calling the platform out for racial bias.

One user asked, “Anyone else see the bias here?”

Another pointed out, “fun but of course the black cat had to be a white person lol little racially biased as usual.”

“I don’t understand why the black cat wouldn’t be Black,” a person said.

Someone commented, “They made both a black and a white cat both white people,” and another said, “Non accurate. Animals with dark fur has dark skin.”

An individual questioned, “Why not a dark skin human but a white guy in black?”

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently acknowledged the limitations of AI-generated art but maintained that its rising popularity will ultimately benefit society as a whole.

“I think the democratisation of creating content has been a big net win for society. It has not been a complete win, there are negative things about it for sure, and certainly it did something about the art form, but I think on the whole it’s been a win,” Altman made this statement during a virtual appearance on an Indian entrepreneur Varun Mayya’s YouTube podcast earlier this month.
