Many Instagram users have expressed their disapproval and said that the new feature can have a negative impact on a person’s mental health.
The new feature has triggered a debate online.
Instagram, which is owned by Meta, is testing a new feature that lets users “dislike” comments. Several users have reported seeing the downward arrow next to the like heart in the comments section, but no official information regarding the feature’s rollout has been made public. Reportedly, users can express whether they agree or disagree with certain comments by clicking the “dislike” button that will show up on both Feed posts and Reels.
Many people dislike the feature because they think it could encourage bullying, negativity, and hatred, even though it seems to work similarly to the Reddit downvote button. The button also received criticism from users who shared screenshots of the comments section with the recently added down arrow.
“You can now downvote/dislike comments on Instagram, whaaatwhy?” said a user.
Reacting to the feature, another commented, “Another feature they are giving that nobody asked for.”
“Creating yet another way (to) spread negativity (for) more engagement is lame as hell,” a user wrote.
“It is like they want to continue to see us argue and hate each other,” a person remarked.
Strongly criticising the feature, an Instagrammer said, “I dislike that feature.. it’s gonna make people sad or insecure about their post & stuff. Don’t like people being mean. They shouldn’t have that option at all.”
Many Instagram users have expressed their disapproval and said that it can have a negative impact on a person’s mental health.
“It will take cyberbullying to another level,” complained an individual.
Someone wrote, “Oh lawd. So, in addition to getting people addicted to likes, let’s further deteriorate their mental health by adding dislikes.”
“I can finally be a full-time hater,” jibed a person on Instagram.
A concerned user said, “Mental illness will rise, not a good idea.”
Another slammed Meta for the new feature and said “They don’t care about kids’ mental health I see.”
