The sensory room at Bengaluru Airport featuring calming elements like bubble tubes and aromatherapy to reduce stress for neurodivergent passengers.
India’s first sensory room at Bengaluru Airport for neurodivergent travellers.
In a groundbreaking move to make air travel more accessible and comfortable, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has introduced a specially designed sensory room for neurodivergent passengers and those with sensitivity issues. This initiative marks the first of its kind in the country, underscoring the airport’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience and inclusivity.
The sensory room is situated near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, ensuring easy access for international travellers. The facility has been carefully designed to cater to the needs of passengers who may struggle with the overwhelming sensory environment of an airport – including bright lights, constant noise, and crowded spaces.
Airports, by nature, can be stressful environments, especially for passengers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Anxiety, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Factors such as security checks, loud announcements, and heavy foot traffic can exacerbate discomfort, making travel an overwhelming experience.
Bengaluru Airport’s sensory room aims to provide a calming sanctuary where these passengers can feel at ease before their flight.
The sensory room has been developed using insights from behavioural science and occupational therapy. Studies suggest that spending just 15 to 30 minutes in a calm, sensory-friendly environment can significantly reduce stress and improve emotional balance. By offering a soothing space, the airport aims to help passengers feel mentally prepared and comfortable before takeoff.
Key Features of the Sensory Room
The sensory room incorporates several carefully curated elements to create a tranquil environment:
1. Lighting and Visual Stimulation
- Bubble tubes, galaxy projectors, and LED cubes provide gentle visual stimulation, creating a calming effect.
- Vibrant wall art and patterned murals are designed to promote mental balance and positivity.
2. Tactile and Sensory Comfort
- Optical curtains, infinity mirrors, and tactile wall panels enhance sensory feedback, helping passengers feel grounded.
- A therapy mat, weighted blanket, and crash pad are available to provide physical comfort and relaxation.
3. Sound and Aroma Control
- White noise machines and sound systems reduce background noise, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
- Scent diffusers and aromatherapy equipment help alleviate stress and maintain a fresh, relaxing ambiance.
Bengaluru Airport’s sensory room is not just for neurodivergent passengers – it also serves travellers with small children, elderly passengers, and those with mental health sensitivities. The initiative reflects a growing awareness of the diverse needs of travellers and sets a new benchmark for passenger comfort at airports.
