Many aspire to study abroad, believing it will pave the way for a better future. However, a recent Reddit post titled “I Regret Moving to Canada” offers a stark reality check. Written by an anonymous Indian student currently living in Canada, the post highlights the harsh challenges faced by international students.
“Every day, I see people in India dreaming of moving abroad, believing there are better opportunities. But let me give you a reality check. I live in Canada, and it is not what it seems,” the user wrote.
According to him, international students are treated as a business opportunity. “Once you land here, you realise you’ve been scammed,” the user added.
The user described the education system in Canada as a “college scam,” saying students pay high fees for low-ranking colleges “but teach almost nothing.” The user mentioned that the courses are outdated and the degrees are not taken seriously by employers.
“Without “Canadian experience,” you’ll be forced into survival jobs like Uber, warehouse labour, or retail just to pay rent. Meanwhile, you’re drowning in tuition debt with no real career growth,” the post continued.
Next, the Redditor highlighted the financial struggles faced by international students in Canada.
“The cost of living in Canada is insane. Rent is sky-high, groceries are overpriced, and basic necessities cost a fortune. Most students end up working long hours at minimum-wage jobs just to survive. Work-life balance doesn’t exist—you either work or you don’t eat,” the user wrote.
The post further reveals that many international students face exploitation, with employers paying them “under the table for illegal wages.”
The user also spoke about the emotional challenges of living in Canada. “In Canada, you’ll be isolated, constantly working, and struggling to connect with people. It can be hard to connect with people from our community as well as we are constantly busy with this “busy” lifestyle. Canadians are polite but distant, and real friendships are rare. Depression and loneliness hit hard, and many students suffer in silence, unable to share their struggles,” the Redditor continued.
In the end, the user urged students to rethink their decisions as “India is growing, and opportunities are improving.”
“The West sells you an illusion, but once you get here, you realize you’ve been brainwashed. Don’t fall for the trap—stay in India, invest in yourself, and build something meaningful at home,” the user concluded.

In the comments section, many fellow Redditors shared their varied reactions.
Someone commented, “West is cool when you have a job, go on work visa and a company is paying you a salary. It’s not cool when you have lakhs of debt and living on peanuts working labor jobs, in short not cool for poor people.”
Another wrote, “If you fall for a scam then you will feel like a scam in Canada. But that is not 100% reality. Depends on how you do your research before coming to Canada. I am in Canada, I don’t think I have been scammed at all.”
Many agreed with the original poster with one sharing, “I gave up my PR to be back in India. It was the most rational decision I’ve ever made.”
A person wrote, “I came back to India after living in Canada for 5 years. Everything you said is true. Everyone dreams about living in Canada but in reality, it’s a shit show. I’m glad I escaped the never-ending loop of low life in Canada.”
