Another day, another debate on work-life balance! In today’s episode, Varun Vummadi, co-founder and CEO of a startup, said that despite drawing hefty salaries, many engineers in India simply don’t want to break a sweat, especially when it comes to working six days a week. Vummadi’s remarks started a discussion on social media, with some questioning the obsession with the six-day workweek.
Others argue that a five-day workweek with eight hours per day is more beneficial for mental and physical health, as well as productivity.
“I’ve noticed a pattern in hiring engineers for our Indian office. Even with a base salary of ₹1 crore, many are unwilling to work hard,” wrote Varun Vummadi on X (formerly known as Twitter).
He added, “A significant number of engineers with 3-8 years of experience are reluctant to work six days a week.”

“Why is there an insistence on a 6-day workweek? The conversation should be about performance, not the number of days in a week, and if anyone is non-performing, it is better to weed them out,” said one social media user in response to the IITian’s post.
Another joined, “Be it any field, the days of ‘pay high salary and make them work 24×7’ are gone, in my opinion. 5 days workweek and 8 hours per day are conducive to mental and physical health. And also productivity.”
“Narayan Murthy made it uncool to work hard by preaching to work hard. They don’t wanna validate him,” someone else added humorously.
A fourth posted, “People are finally realising the importance of prioritising health above all else.”
“Why should anyone work for 6 days a week? Sitting jobs are as it way too problematic for health. Looks like they are quite intelligent people after all,” expressed a fifth.
A sixth said, “Can you post the link to the JD? I could not see 1 cr job on your careers page.”
