America on Bangladesh Hindus: Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamurthy on Tuesday again raised his voice against the violence and persecution of Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh. During his address in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, he talked about the situation after Sheikh Hasina steps down from the post of Prime Minister in August 2024.
According to media reports, Krishnamurthy laid special emphasis on the significant increase in attacks on Hindus after Sheikh Hasina left office. He said, “I raise my voice against violence and persecution against Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh. During Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971, an estimated 300,000 to 30 lakh people were killed, the majority of whom were Hindus. In Bangladesh Hindus are still being targeted today – their homes and businesses are being destroyed, and their temples are being vandalized.”
The Indian American congressman said, “These attacks have increased again since the ouster of former Prime Minister Hasina last August, with more than 2,000 incidents reported in August alone. I have spoken to the State Department and the upcoming Senate We have called for action in our confirmation hearings, but I urge our colleagues to act now to protect Bangladesh’s religious minorities. Cannot be allowed to repeat.”
Former PM and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina had to leave power and flee to India in August last year after the anger arising from the student movement. After this, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, which is currently ruling the country.
Since the coming into existence of the interim government, fundamentalist forces have gained strength in the country. Minority communities and their religious places are being targeted. The government is being accused of discriminating against minorities.
