‘India does not even buy a sack of maize from America’, Trump’s minister Howard Lutnik’s statement


US Commerce Minister Howard Lutnik has severely criticized India’s trade policies on Sunday (September 14, 2025). He said that New Delhi takes advantage of global commerce, but it limits access to the market of India.

Lutnik said, ‘India continuously mentions its 140 crore population, but when it comes to American agricultural products, it does not show any openness on this issue.

In an interview to Axios, US Commerce Minister Howard Lutnik said, ‘India is proud that it has a population of 140 crores, so why does he not buy a sack maize from us? They put a tariff of everything. So either you accept it, otherwise it will be difficult for you to do business with the world’s biggest consumer.

Although he admitted that India needed cheap energy for development, but Lutnik argued that such agreements highlight imbalance in global trade diplomacy.
