In a bizarre incident that has come to light, a 38-year-old man from Arizona, US, allegedly left his children in a car to visit an adult store. He spent nearly an hour inside the adult store while forgetting about his children, aged between two and seven, who were inside the car with the engine shut, no air conditioning, and the windows rolled up. The man, now identified as Ascencio Largo, has been arrested.
According to a report by The New York Post, the incident occurred at approximately 3:40 PM on July 24, when the temperature at the location was around 106 degrees Fahrenheit, or 41 degrees Celsius. The police learnt about the situation after receiving multiple calls.
The officers arrived at the parking lot of The Adult Shoppe and found the children inside the car, exposed to the sweltering heat. “Officers responded to a parking lot of a business near 24th Street and Madison Street regarding multiple children inside a vehicle that was not running. When officers arrived, they located multiple children in the car. Officers were able to gain entry into the car and secure the children,” said the Phoenix Police.
His Children Showed Signs Of Heat Distress
They rescued the four kids, who were two, three, four, and seven years old, respectively. The temperature inside the car had risen dangerously to 125 degrees Fahrenheit, which is approximately 51.6 degrees Celsius. Sgt. Rob Scherer told the outlet, “There were signs of distress, you know, colour discolouration, you know, skin bright red, sweating. Clearly, the heat was affecting the children.” The children were taken into an air-conditioned police SUV and given water afterwards.
After rescuing them, when the police started looking for their guardian, they found their father inside the sex store. Ascencio Largo was inside the store for an hour. Officers also noticed that he smelled of alcohol. They also noted that his driver’s license revealed that he should have had an ignition interlock in place, but his car did not have one.
The Man Has Been Booked Under Child Abuse
Maricopa County Commissioner Jane McLaughlin said during a court hearing that he initially refused to acknowledge that it was his car. “It just indicates a strong level of reckless culpability of knowing. It’s difficult to say that anybody who grew up in Arizona doesn’t know that children and dogs die in closed cars,” Jane McLaughlin said.
Ascencio Largo has now been charged with four counts of child abuse and four counts of endangerment.
