A 13-year-old boy assisted in the home birth of his younger brother after his mother unexpectedly went into labour. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the teenager helped deliver the baby while receiving real-time instructions from medical personnel via phone, keeping his mother and the infant safe until help arrived.
When the Fujian youngster called an emergency centre, he explained that his mother, 37 weeks pregnant, was in excruciating pain and that her water had broken. He also expressed fear over his mother’s health to paramedic Chen Chaoshun, saying he could already see the baby’s head.
Chen Chaoshun then called the teenager and gave him instructions on how to position his mother, help with the birth and keep her calm until an ambulance raced to their house. The youngster gently assisted his mother in giving birth to a healthy baby boy, as instructed by the paramedic.
When it came time to clamp the umbilical cord, the boy couldn’t find a clean shoelace or string. With quick thinking, Chen Chaoshun suggested that he wear a mask strap to stop the bleeding and infection. Medical personnel arrived shortly after and took the mother and infant, who were both in stable condition, to the hospital.
Reportedly, the remarkable story received over 92 million views on Chinese social media in a short period.
Numerous people complimented the teen’s poise, and one individual wrote, “The boy remained calm and cooperated well with the paramedic. He saved his mother and brother!”
Another said, “This boy can proudly tell his little brother that he was the one who brought him into the world.”
Not everyone, though, had a favourable opinion of the incident. A commenter asked why the woman was left in such a dire situation, stating, “This is not something to be praised. How could a pregnant woman about to give birth and a child be left alone at home? The husband and in-laws seem very irresponsible.”
Meanwhile, experts in medicine offered their opinions, highlighting the dangers of emergency home births. Rapid labour can occasionally result in unplanned home births, particularly for women who have already given birth, according to Zhang Fanju, an obstetric nurse from Shandong province. “Home births are risky. Family members should monitor the woman’s condition closely and get her to the hospital in time,” Zhang recommended.
