Traffic congestion continues to be a major nightmare in many Asian cities. According to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index, which tracks traffic issues from “387 cities across 55 countries on 6 continents,” has ranked two Indian cities among Asia’s Worst Cities for Traffic. While London took the top spot in the global chart, in Asia, Bengaluru ranked 6th, where commuters lose 132 hours annually. Pune came in 7th place, where people spend an average of 27 minutes and 10 seconds in traffic, which is 128 extra hours. Other Indian cities like New Delhi and Mumbai also appear in the list, with 44 and 54 ranks, respectively.

Sharing the data on Instagram, Statista wrote, “In the first place are Asia’s worst cities for traffic. In Bengaluru, drivers spend an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds per 10 km in traffic, totalling about 132 extra hours in rush hour annually, according to the TomTom Traffic Index 2023. Pune, Manila, and Taichung also rank among the slowest city centres in Asia, while London tops the global list with the longest travel times.”

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “I feel Mumbai is secretly training to be in this list.”

Another shared, “Who is reaching 10kms in 27 minutes in Pune? It takes around 45 minutes now.”

“I’ve experienced traffic in Manila, and it’s something beyond human imagination,” a comment read.

Another mentioned, “As a current Punekar, it’s sadly true.”

An individual shared, “28 minutes for 10 km in Bengaluru is a dream, honestly. Generally, it’s more like 4-5 km in that much time.”

One more added, “Where is Kolkata? Bro never been on a bus from Science City to the Airport on weekdays after office hours.”

According to the ranking, the top 5 cities with the worst traffic are London, Dublin, Toronto, Milan and Lima.

TomTom’s website explains that they analyse cities worldwide based on reasons like “average travel time, fuel costs and CO2 emissions.” Their goal is to provide helpful, high-quality information that can help drivers, pedestrians, city planners, cars and policymakers in dealing with traffic issues. The data is available for free.
