An IIT Bombay alumnus has revealed that he became a multi-millionaire without following the so-called “ideal” success habits. Aman Goel, CEO of GreyLabs AI, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said he didn’t subscribe to general habits propagated as essential for success: waking up early, reading books or taking cold showers.

Goel said he wakes up at 8:30 AM or even 9 AM and prefers knowledge intake via social media and podcasts rather than reading. He emphasised that there was no need to blindly follow habits for success and that one should take effective steps towards adding value to customers.

He shared three easy steps to become an entrepreneur: build something valuable, sell it to customers and repeat as necessary until your financial goals are met. He explained that success was all about the action and delivery of values rather than sticking to some ideal routines. Goel’s claims have received a mixed response online, gathering more than 60,000 views and both praise and criticism.

Coming out to address the backlash, Goel explained he did not mean to demean the goodness of good habits but rather to challenge the idea that they were prerequisites to success. He instead encouraged people to adopt routines that actually mean something to their personal lives, not those that would give in to the fear of missing out (FOMO) created by hustle culture influencers.

Taking a dig at Infosys boss N. R. Narayana Murthy’s comments, a user wrote: “Ye sab choro, kaam 70 hours karte ho ya nai … ???” (Forget all this, do you work 70 hours or not … ???)

A user said: “Good habits just increase your probability of winning. Not all college dropouts go on to build successful startups. The probability of someone succeeding with A and A+ grades is more than college dropouts.”

Another user said: “Congratulations and fully agree with your thoughts here.”

A user said: “Love this! Success isn’t about fitting into a mould….it’s about finding what works for you and taking action. Thanks for keeping it real!”

Aman Goel earned his Bachelor’s in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay, securing an All India Rank of 33 in the JEE Advanced examination. After graduating, he founded Cogno AI, an artificial intelligence solutions company that was later acquired by Exotel. Currently, he leads GreyLabs AI, a Mumbai-based startup specialising in speech analytics for financial institutions. It uses generative AI technologies to automate the analysis of call recordings and other unstructured data, thus providing insight into areas that financial institutions can use to add value.
