If you live in Bengaluru, you know the infrastructure is often considered inadequate, with issues like unending traffic, inconsistent road quality and struggles to keep pace with the city’s public transport. Despite ongoing development efforts, it is a major concern for residents. Now, a post has surfaced on social media comparing the urban infrastructure in Bengaluru with that of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The now-viral post shared on X (formerly Twitter), which has gone viral, shows a collage featuring a recent image of Jakarta with well-maintained cycle and bus lanes and another picture showing the underdeveloped city during 1971. Sharing the picture, the user pointed out that despite being twice as densely populated as Bengaluru in India, Jakarta has significantly improved its urban transport planning over the decades. It has developed dedicated bus and cycle lanes over time, whereas Bengaluru continues to struggle with basic infrastructure despite its massive infrastructure budget.

“Jakarta which is twice as dense as Bangalore, can afford to have dedicated bus and cycle lanes. Why can’t we build it? It costs way less than 1 lakh crore we’re spending on those stupid projects,” the caption read.

Shared a day ago, the post has sparked widespread discussion online, with many questioning the city’s priorities when it comes to pedestrian-friendly planning. Social media users chimed into the comments section of the post to share their frustrations about Bengaluru’s poor urban planning. Many stated that certain areas of Bengaluru look worse in today’s time than Jakarta did in the 1970s.

“Is it safe to say that parts of 2024’s Bengaluru look worse than 1971’s Jakarta? I feel sad just typing this,” read a comment.

Another added, “BRT isn’t the worst way to travel if you build and operate it better. Cars are the worst way. Bengaluru needs a metro for long distances, Buses for short distances and Footpaths for the last mile. That’s the best way to travel.”

“Not all areas of Jakarta looked like this. When you go off main roads in the city, it has been a lot messy,” shared a user.

Another user pointed out, “1971’s Jakarta was already better than any city in India today.”

“The answer is self-evident in the photos you shared. Road width. Lane width,” an account remarked.

An individual stated, “Cycle lanes are useless here. Might as well build a 2 wheeler lane for so many delivery drivers. And a bus lane isn’t needed if your metro network is strong, so the focus should be on that.”
