Tahawwur Rana Extradition: 26/11 Mumbai attack accused Tawwur Rana has filed a petition in the US Supreme Court to avoid extradition in India. Demanding the emergency stay, he claimed that if he was sent to India, he would be tortured.
Rana said in his petition that he is a Muslim of Pakistani origin, so he may have to face discrimination and torture in India. He also argued that his health is not good and he is struggling with diseases like Parkinson’s.
Donald Trump has already announced extradition
Last month, US President Donald Trump announced that Tawwur Rana would be extradited to India. At a press conference with PM Modi at the White House, Trump said, “The Mumbai attack conspirator and one of the most dangerous people in the world will be extradited to Tawavur Rana to face justice in India.” Trump also said that he and PM Modi will fight the dangers arising out of fundamentalist Islam.
Rana cited his safety
Rana filed a petition in the US Supreme Court saying that if he was sent to India, he would not live for long. He said that he will be targeted on national, religious and cultural grounds. Citing the report of Human Rights Watch 2023, he claimed that religious minorities, especially Muslims, are discriminated against in India.
Tehwavur Rana can be brought to India soon
According to media reports, Rana can be brought to India in a few weeks. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said, “Our jails are ready for Rana. We kept Ajmal Kasab, so there is no threat to security.”
NIA court appeared when brought to India
After coming to India, Tehwavur Rana will be produced in the NIA court. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) can demand his remand so that he can be questioned deeply about the Mumbai attack. This extradition is considered a major success for the Government of India and investigative agencies.
