At a time when many tourists recount unpleasant encounters with strangers in foreign countries, one woman from the United States had an unexpectedly heartwarming experience in India. Steph, a digital creator and travel advisor, was travelling by train when she accidentally left her wallet behind. To her surprise, she soon received a message from a local man named Chirag. Not only had he found her wallet, but he also went out of his way to return it safely.
A video of the tourist’s meeting with Chirag has been going viral on the internet, showing the man’s humble and selfless nature. In the video, Steph details how she lost her wallet while travelling on the train, assuming that it was gone for good until she got a message from Chirag, a shopkeeper in Bhuj, Gujarat. Steph, along with her husband, instantly went to the shop and got her wallet back. While expressing gratitude, Steph also wanted to offer a tip to Chirag, but he firmly denied anything in return.
The video shows the tourist extending a bundle of cash to the shopkeeper, who consistently refused to take it and said that he was happy to help. Unsuccessful in tipping Chirag, Steph came back to her car when her husband also made a last try, but in vain. The couple was left overwhelmed and grateful toward Chirag and his gesture. “I feel like there’s so much negative news that comes out of India, and there’s so much positive that happens here,” Steph says at the end of the video. Her husband further continued, “Unbelievable. He won’t take it. I still can’t get over it. It’s a beautiful country.”
Social media users quickly reacted to the video, with many Indians expressing pride. One wrote, “I feel proud that I was born and raised in Kutch. Chirag has beautifully portrayed the essence of Kutch and India,” while another added, “Changing perspective…one day at a time. Thanks to people like CHIRAG.”
“Thank you for the positivity about my country. Appreciate you very much,” another comment read.
The video was originally shared in 2023 and has once again surfaced online, reiterating people’s belief in humanity and supporting one another.
