‘I Am Never Flying Air India…’: Ahmedabad Plane Crash Causes Mass Hysteria. How Safe Is Flying?

Last Updated:

Air India Crash: Passengers booked on near-future Air India flights are nervous to go onboard, to put it mildly. Here are some stats that will help you calm the nerves.

Passengers booked on future Air India flights are sharing concerns after the AI-171 plane crash tragedy in Ahmedabad.

The devastating crash of Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on Thursday has brought immense anxiety and set panic alarms among frequent fliers. This was the first-ever fatal crash of a Dreamliner, that seemingly failed to gain altitude after taking off from Ahmedabad, Gujarat in India and reached a maximum height of 625 feet before coming crashing down into a medical college mess near the airport. 241 of the 242 souls onboard—230 passengers, 10 crew members, and two pilots— perished. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, an Indian-origin British national, was the lone survivor of the crash who was returning to the UK. The jet was bound for London’s Gatwick and it marked one of India’s worst aviation tragedies.

When families received the unfathomable news of their loved ones lost in the horrific accident and as the nation collectively mourned the tragedy in unison, there was a section of ‘X’ users who had air travel bookings and admitted that they were extremely nervous about boarding a flight.

Scared To Fly…

Several passengers, apparently booked on an Air India flight, began tagging the carrier on ‘X’ to ask if they could get a refund if they went ahead and cancelled their tickets due to restlessness and paranoia following the AI-171 disaster. Others wondered if they would ever want to fly an Air India flight again.

Engagement Farming?

“How come suddenly everyone on TL has an Air India flight scheduled in upcoming days ….. Now is not a good time to spin stories and make everything about yourself. Not a shade on those who genuinely have one booked, (sic)” a user on ‘X’, reacting to the flurry of Air India related posts, wrote.

A user, responding to the above post, suggested that since it was the summer, Air India, much like other carriers in the nation, would be experiencing a spike in bookings.

“its summer time and people are travelling, going for vacation. and ai dominates has a high volume of flights. what happened is sad, scary, rare and shocking. its peoples paranoia talking imo (sic).”

Is Flying Safe?

Despite the ugly online debate of who was posting for “clicks” and “engagement” Vs who were genuinely worried about getting on a flight after the Air India crash, the stats are resoundingly in favour of flying, fortunately.

The following numbers may help you put things into perspective and perhaps help put you at ease.

“Commercial aviation is one of the safest modes of transportation. In the U.S., the fatality rate for commercial flights is approximately 0.07 deaths per billion passenger-miles traveled (based on NTSB data from recent decades),” Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chat bot, noted.

“Globally, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported 0.11 fatalities per billion passengers in 2023, with only a few fatal accidents among millions of flights. The risk of dying in a plane crash is roughly 1 in 11 million per flight for scheduled commercial flights.”

In contrast, driving is far riskier, it added. “The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports about 12.8 deaths per billion vehicle-miles traveled in 2023. This makes driving roughly 180 times more dangerous than flying per mile traveled.”

Air Crash Makes Big News

Air travel is the most sophisticated mode of transport. In a rare event when a plane goes down, it makes big news worldwide. Extensive investigations follow. Final reports and investigative findings help piece together the chain of events that led to a catastrophe. Trainings and general awareness after an incident, fatal or otherwise, also help in avoiding future mishaps.

The general rule of thumb according to aviation experts is to avoid a plane carrier that makes news over security lapses – disregards the safety of its crew and passengers, and ignores or violates advisories from aviation authorities and concerned airports.
