The name ‘Chausa’ is rooted in a pvotal historical event. After defeating humayun at Chausa (Now in Bihar) in 1539, sher shah suri Commemorated his triumph by renaming his favourite mango, originally from ghazipur and known as ‘ghazipuria’, As chausa.
According to Dr I.K. Kushwaha, a mango expert and head of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sher Shah Suri was an avid lover of mangoes. He owned orchards of rare varieties and celebrated his victory by sharing the renamed mango, forever linking its sweetness to his success.
Chausa’s Distinctive Appeal
The Chausa mango stands out for more than its story. Its rich aroma, golden hue, and melt-in-the-mouth texture make it a favourite even today.
It continues to be heavily cultivated in Saharanpur, playing a key role in India’s international mango exports.

Interestingly, what began as a tribute to military victory became a favourite at the Mughal court. Even Emperor Aurangzeb is said to have relished the Chausa mango, ensuring its presence in royal feasts and spreading its fame across the empire.
