Modern restaurants are known for their high-end services, offering consumers a first-class experience. From plush seating areas to gourmet menus, they seem to have it all. However, an Indian man recently shared a strange encounter at a modern restaurant that left him questioning the boundaries of such services. Instead of a typical machine tissue dispenser in the washroom, he was surprised to find an actual human stationed beside the washbasin to hand out tissues to guests. His post on Reddit, titled “Another fellow human being in India treated as a Tissue Paper Dispenser,” shed light on the incident that left him feeling uneasy.

The Reddit user described walking into the restaurant’s washroom and noticing a man standing near the washbasin with a stack of tissues. He explained that the man’s job was to hand tissues to guests after they washed their hands. Initially, he ignored the situation but later observed the man closely which made him feel uncomfortable.

“After washing my hands, he respectfully leaned forward to hand me a tissue to dry my hands. I couldn’t help but feel bad and sorry for him. It seemed like a result of societal and capitalist pressures forcing someone into such a demeaning role just to make a living,” he added.

In a second encounter, he couldn’t resist asking the man why he was doing this job. The response was simple: “Because my manager asked me to.”

“I strongly believe we should not treat our fellow human beings this way, forcing them to perform such tasks under the guise of providing “superior service.” Have you noticed this happening too? I hope these are isolated incidents, but I can’t help but find it deeply troubling,” the user concluded.

The Reddit post quickly drew a flurry of reactions, with social media users sharing their own experiences and thoughts.

One user remarked, “I guess it was a premium restroom in a mall, I had a similar experience in a BLR mall. They think it is part of premium experience but leaves a disgusting impression about the mall management.”

Another commented, “The social commentary aside (which I also agree with), I find it very unsettling the way they keep staring at you. Like I’m in the washroom to get a break from the socialising and take a minute to decompress, and this guy then keep looking at you expectantly the entire time, and it kinda pressurises you to hurry up.”

“This is common in a lot of countries in pubs… As someone suggested handing out paper towels is not the job.. they are there to prevent stupidity… Handing out tissues is a courtesy for tips from what I have seen,” someone pointed out.

Another added, “They are there to keep an eye on the guests so that they don’t damage something.”
