Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) came into existence by an Act of Parliament, Central University (Amendment) Act 2014 (Number 35) of 2014. The university became functional on 3 February 2016. Located in Motihari, Bihar, this university is close to the historical site of Champaran Satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi. The main objective of the establishment of the university was to bring higher education to rural areas and coordinate modern education with Gandhian values.

The admission process in MGCU is quite transparent and organized. Admission for graduate courses is mainly based on 12th grade marks, while the university conducts its entrance exam for postgraduate courses. For admission to the university, students have to take the CUET (Common University Entrance Test) exam. Admission is given only on the basis of marks obtained in this examination. For postgraduate and PhD courses, interviews or oral examinations of shortlisted candidates are also taken after the entrance examination. There is a provision of reservation for special categories like SC, ST, OBC and disabled students according to government rules.

Currently there are more than 40 departments under several faculty in the university, which provide various courses. Faculty of Humanities include subjects like Hindi, English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology. Science faculty has courses of physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, computer science. Commerce and Management has courses of BCom, M.Com, MBA, Finance Management. In addition, the education faculty provides courses of B.Ed., M.Ed, international relations in international studies, regional studies and Gandhian thoughts, peace studies, conflict solutions.
