In Lavkush Nagar, located in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, an old age home is quietly evolving into a sanctuary for the elderly and forgotten. What began as a refuge for just a few has now become a lifeline for many. But what’s behind this growing need? As societal values continue to decline, more elderly people find themselves in desperate need of care and compassion. As such, many seniors are finding solace in this once small, now vital, haven.
Nandgiri, an elderly man from Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, shared his story with Local18 about how he ended up at the old age home in Madhya Pradesh just three months ago. While there is an old age home in Banda, he faced a dilemma — his children would have struggled to live in the same place as him. The local community would criticise them, accusing them of being unable to care for their elderly father. Desperate for a solution, Nandgiri enquired at an old age home in Chhatarpur, but there was no room. It was then that he learned about the old age home in Lavkush Nagar. Without hesitation, he travelled there and has since found a new place to call home.
Nandgiri said, “I have two sons. I even built a house for them. I gave them everything. But even after this, the elder daughter-in-law refused to give me food. It is the duty of the elder son to keep and serve his father. When he is disrespected and thrown out of the house, then which family should he remember? I have also lost interest in my wife. I have a younger son whom I remember, but he also earns in Delhi. How can I stay there with him? I have just come back after meeting my younger son.”
Another elderly man, Maiyadin, shared his painful experience, saying, “I was troubled by my grandson, which is why I ran away to this old age home. My son works in Delhi, and my grandson would constantly ask me for money. But as a labourer at my age, where could I get the money from? He even beat me several times when I couldn’t give him anything. Despite everything, I couldn’t bring myself to file a police complaint, as he is still my grandson. I kept my feelings to myself and made my way here, to this old age home, seeking peace and safety.”
The old age home in Lavkush Nagar is managed by the Samagra Vikas Mahila Samiti, an NGO led by Upkar Kaur. The day-to-day operations of the home are overseen by Vimla Devi, ensuring that the elderly residents receive the care and attention they desperately need. This initiative continues to provide a safe haven for those in their twilight years, offering them a sense of dignity and peace in a world that often forgets them.
