Marottichal, a peaceful village in Kerala, was once plagued by widespread alcohol addiction. But everything changed when a local man introduced the community to a game of strategy and focus—chess. According to travel creator Shenaz Treasury, it was Charaliyil Unnikrishnan, affectionately known as the “Chess Man,” who led this quiet revolution. Under his influence, the villagers gradually replaced their drinking habits with a passion for chess. Today, nearly everyone in Marottichal plays the game at work, in schools, and even at home.
The villagers believe chess helps their memory and improves their math skills. It also gives women more confidence. They say that instead of drinking, playing chess can bring happiness and success to their lives.
In the video shared on Instagram, Shenaz Treasury said, “One man came and introduced them all to chess. Guess what? They haven’t touched alcohol in years. 90% of this village plays chess, they play at work, they play it at school, and they even play when they sleep.”
In the caption, the content creator mentioned, “What’s your addiction? All of us have one. What do you think of this Incredible Village that beat their alcohol problem? It’s true the best way to let go of an addiction is to start a new one. And let’s face it, all of us have our addictions. Some of us are addicted to food (Overeaters Anonymous). Some are addicted to alcohol, some to p O r N, some to fantasy (fantasy addicts), some to gambling, some to working out. The trick is to replace it with something healthier.”
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Kerala sir..100% literacy sir.”
Another shared, “Chess Addiction = Addiction of Victory and Leadership.”
“Basically, the village wants to be always addicted to something. Anyways, good change,” a comment read.
An individual stated, “Kudos to you for bringing such meaningful stuff. And praise to the people who bring their addiction down.”
Another mentioned, “Chess is the only game with infinite moves.”
One more added, “Overcoming addiction isn’t easy, but finding a healthier passion can truly change lives. More stories like this need to be shared.”
In a chat with The Christian Science Monitor, Charaliyil Unnikrishnan shared that the village once went through very difficult times. But learning and playing chess helped everyone come together. Now, the village is working to include chess in school lessons, so children can start learning it early. Many young players from Marottichal have already started taking part in chess competitions both in India and abroad.
