Nitish Kumar was born on 1 March 1951 in Bakhtiyarpur, Bihar. His family was deeply associated with the freedom struggle. His father, Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh, was an Ayurvedic physician and was also active in the freedom struggle. Nitish’s mother, Parameshwari Devi, was a housewife. There was an atmosphere of education and social service in the house, which gave direction to Nitish’s personality.

The journey of education started from Bakhtiyarpur

Nitish Kumar received his primary education from a local school in Bakhtiyarpur. Since childhood, he was very fast in studies. His teachers remember him as a disciplined and smart student. He always performed well in studies and had special interest in subjects like science and mathematics.

Bright students of Shri Ganesh High School

During his schooling, Nitish Kumar studied from Shri Ganesh High School, Bakhtiyarpur. This school was known for its excellent education environment at that time. Further studies from Patna Science College

After school, he joined Patna Science College, one of the most prestigious colleges in Bihar. Here he did Pre-University Course (PUC) and strengthened his hold in the field of science. Engineering studies from NIT Patna

Nitish Kumar took admission in Bihar College of Engineering, Patna (now called NIT Patna) for higher education. In the year 1972, he obtained Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from here.

During his college days, he was an active student and was associated with various technical clubs. Engineering studies strengthened discipline, technical approach and practical thinking in his life. These qualities later proved helpful to him in adopting a planned and development-centric approach in politics.
