In response to US President Donald Trump’s hefty new tariffs, several Canadian businesses are promoting locally made products as a way to boycott items coming from the United States. The US President recently imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods, escalating trade tensions between the neighbouring countries. The interest in purchasing ‘Made in Canada’ products is further fueled by Trump’s controversial remarks saying that Canada could become the ‘51st state’ of the US.
Several Canadians, infuriated by Trump’s decision, have vowed to boycott American goods. This decision is frequently going viral on social media, with users posting about buying Canadian goods. Additionally, businesses that promote or highlight ‘Made in Canada’ products are earning widespread praise.
Chapman, the extremely popular ice cream brand in Canada, has taken a dig at Trump’s stance. In a Facebook post on March 8, Chief Operating Officer Ashley Chapman said, “As Canada faces the greatest threat to our sovereignty since WWII, the effects of Donald Trump’s threats are already being felt by most Canadians. As a proud Canadian-owned and operated company, we want to do our part to support Canadians.”
The brand further added that it would maintain current prices by absorbing all “immediate increases in their costs due to the Trump tariffs for the rest of the year.
Canada’s largest bulk food retailer, Bulk Barn, also threw its weight behind the ‘Buy Canada’ movement. At certain locations, shoppers were greeted with a message announcing that Bulk Barn would update its signage to highlight products of Canadian origin. “At Bulk Barn Foods Limited, for over 40 years we have been proudly Canadian, with over 280 stores from coast to coast. We are committed to providing you with quality products and the information you need to make informed choices. As part of this commitment, we will be updating our product signage to highlight products with Canadian content. This process will take time, but we are working hard to update as many items as possible, as quickly as we can,” said Bulk Barn, according to a photograph of the flyer shared on Reddit.
Canadian discount store chain Giant Tiger also stepped in and announced that they are no longer accepting US currency. This decision is widely lauded by pro-Canada social media users.
Meanwhile, a handful of barcode scanning apps have popped up in Canada to help customers avoid American products in grocery stores. All developed within the last few weeks have the option to search for “Buy Canadian” on Apple iOS or Google Play app stores. It will bring up a list of red-and-white options, including Buy Beaver; is this Canadian? Maple Scan: Buy Canadian; Shop Canadian; Canly-Buy Canadian; Is it Canadian? and check the label.
