Bus-Truck Accident in Brazil: In Brazil, around 4 am on Saturday (December 21, 2024), there was a horrific collision between a bus loaded with passengers and a truck on the BR-116 National Highway. After the collision, the bus caught fire, killing 38 people.
According to the fire department, all victims have been evacuated from the crash site on the major BR-116 highway near the city of Teofilo Otoni in Minas Gerais state. A total of 45 people were traveling in the bus, out of which 38 people including the bus driver were found dead. Apart from this, other seriously injured passengers were sent to the local hospital. After the accident, the truck driver fled from the spot. At the same time, three people traveling in another car collided with the truck and got trapped under it. They survived the accident.
Brazilian President expressed condolences for the dead
After this horrific accident, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wrote on his social media account, ‘The Brazilian government is ready to provide all necessary help and the Federal Highway Police is present at the scene.’ He wrote on Twitter, “I express my deepest condolences to the families of the more than 30 victims of this terrible accident in Teofilo Otoni, Minas Gerais. In addition, I pray for the speedy recovery of the survivors of the accident.”
The cause of the accident will be known after forensic investigation
Regarding the matter, the local fire department said that due to different statements received from several witnesses, a forensic investigation will be required to investigate the cause of the accident. Initially firefighters had said that the tire of the bus had burst, causing the driver to lose control and a collision occurred between the local bus and the truck at around 4 am local time. The accident occurred on the BR-116 highway, a major route connecting Brazil’s densely populated south-eastern region with the impoverished north-eastern region.
However, according to the fire department, eyewitnesses said that a granite block loaded in the truck had become loose and fell on the road, causing the truck to collide with the bus. The department said that “only forensic investigation will confirm the true version.”
