A 29-year-old man from Colorado died after being struck by lightning while standing in ankle-deep water at a beach in Central Florida last Friday, US-based media outlets reported. The reports said that the man was on his honeymoon.

The incident occurred at New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County. First responders performed CPR and rushed him to a local hospital in critical condition, but he died the next day, Volusia County Beach Safety Director Tammy Malphurs told CBS’ Florida affiliate WKMG.

“It was clear blue sky, and the storm was miles away from us,” a witness told local broadcaster WKMG. Malphurs described the strike as “an extremely rare occurrence”.

The reports said that officials did not disclose the name of the man.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed that the victim was on a delayed honeymoon with his wife.

In a Facebook post, Chitwood wrote: “So sorry for the tragic loss of a young man here on a delayed honeymoon with his wife. At 29 years old, he should have had many more anniversaries with her for years to come. Sending sincere condolences to this young woman on behalf of all of us in Volusia County who were hoping against hope that the diligent efforts of our lifeguards, EMS team and ER staff would bring him back to her.”

The reports said that beachgoers and emergency personnel were rushing to help after the strike.

On the same day, around 12:18 pm, two golfers were also indirectly struck by lightning at the Venetian Bay Golf Course in New Smyrna Beach. Emergency crews evaluated both on scene. Neither required hospitalization.

“This serves as an important reminder of, ‘When thunder roars, go indoors,’” said Ava Hanner, public information officer for the City of New Smyrna Beach. “If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning, even if the sky looks clear”.
