An engineer’s resourceful mind can make even the most challenging tasks seem simple. Many projects that would typically cost a fortune can be executed efficiently and affordably by skilled engineers. This is exemplified by an engineer from Jamui, who has ingeniously constructed a house that floats on water using only jugaad – a colloquial term for innovative, low-cost solutions. This unique dwelling is crafted using plastic drums and iron pipes.
The most remarkable aspect of this house is its ability to float and move effortlessly across the water’s surface. Shrikant Vishwakarma, a resident of Jamui district headquarters, is the mastermind behind this creation, which is currently stationed at the renowned Kukurjhap Dam in the Barhat block of Jamui district.
The framework of the house is ingeniously constructed using square iron pipes. Shrikant Vishwakarma explained that plastic drums, meticulously sealed to form a stable base, are strategically placed beneath the house. These drums provide the necessary buoyancy, ensuring that the structure remains afloat and never sinks. A tin shed forms the outer shell of the house. Shrikant revealed that the construction process took a mere two to three days, with over half of the work completed at his workshop. The remaining assembly was done at the dam, after which the house was ready to float.
While the primary purpose of this floating house is fish farming, visitors can also enjoy the unique experience of sitting inside and taking a leisurely ride. Kukurjhap Dam is a hub for large-scale fish farming. Transporting fish, food and other necessities across the water bodies using small boats posed a significant challenge, especially during the rainy and summer seasons. This floating house was conceived as a solution to these logistical hurdles.
Visitors can access the floating house by boat and enjoy a good view of the surroundings. Shrikant informed Local 18 that a similar house is being constructed in Banka district. For those eager to witness this floating marvel can visit Kukurjhap Dam in the Barhat block of Jamui district and experience the joy of floating on the water.
