Amid growing tensions between the two neighbouring countries, many Indians have turned their back on Turkish Airlines. Turkey publicly showed its support to Pakistan after the Indian Armed Forces unleashed a series of missile strikes on terror camps in Pak and PoK under Operation Sindoor on May 7. The strikes in Pakistan came after the horrific Pahalgam terrorist attack, which killed 26 innocent tourists. Now, calls to boycott Turkish-linked businesses are trending across social media platforms.

“A Call To Every Proud Indian. Our nation’s dignity and security come first. When countries like Turkey openly support Pakistan and those who threaten India’s sovereignty, we must stand united. Every rupee spent on Turkish Airlines or tourism to Turkey strengthens those who stand against our national interest,” read a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Let’s show the world that India stands tall – with pride, with purpose, and with unity. Boycott Turkish Airlines. Say no to travel that funds our detractors. Jay Hind, Jay Bharat,” it added.

The post soon went viral, garnering support from fellow Indian citizens. One of them suggested, “Turkey should be boycotted on the global platform, we should also fulfil our responsibility towards our country.”

Another user urged his fellow Indians to prioritise “national interest over convenience”. “Let’s support actions that reflect our pride, unity,” he added.

According to Reuters, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan contacted Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to convey his solidarity in the wake of Operation Sindoor. During the conversation, Erdogan spoke highly of Pakistan’s “calm and restrained policies”.

“Erdogan stated that Turkey was ready to do what it could to prevent the tensions from escalating, and that his diplomatic contacts in that regard would continue,” the Turkish Presidency said.

Following the news, many Indians criticised IndiGo for its partnership with Turkish Airlines. The national carrier was urged to sever ties with a country that “strongly supports” Pakistan, despite its connection to the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists.

Following the horrific incident, Turkey claimed to have maintained a neutral stance and even called for adherence to international law. However, as per some reports, six Turkish military transport aircraft recently touched down in Pakistan to supply military assistance.
