AI-generated Studio Ghibli-inspired art has taken over social media outlets in the past 24 hours but a video showing Studio Ghibli world’s co-founder Hayao Miyazaki’s opinion on AI-generated image is going viral.
In the video, where Miyazaki is heard saying that AI-generated animation was an “insult to life itself” is going viral.
Recently, there’s been a surge in Studio Ghibli-related news. OpenAI’s latest image-generation update has enabled users to create Studio Ghibli-style portraits, leading to a flood of such images across social media platforms.
Studio Ghibli has been in the spotlight for its meticulous 4K restoration of the 1997 film “Princess Mononoke.” The studio’s careful preservation of original 35mm negatives has allowed for high-quality scans that align with director Hayao Miyazaki’s original vision.
In the video, a group of animators and designers are seen with Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki and Hayao Miyazaki who are showing them their AI-powered animation. They tell Suzuki and Miyazaki that the grotesque, zombie-like figure they created can generate unnatural movements beyond human imagination.
One of the presenters said the figure “doesn’t feel pain, has no concept of protecting its head, and moves in unsettling ways—something that could be used in a zombie video game”.
That, however, did not impress Miyazaki and recalled a friend with a disability who struggled with simple movements like giving a high five due to stiff muscles.
He said the image reminded him of his friend’s difficulties, adding that such unnatural movements were not entertaining.
Studio Ghibli is famous for its breathtaking animation as well as its deeply emotional storytelling and richly detailed worlds.
It was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. The Japanese studio has produced some of the most beloved animated films of all time, including Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle.
It is also known for Grave of the Fireflies (1988), a harrowing war drama, which is regarded as one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made, depicting the brutal cost of war on civilians, especially children.
