Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday wrote an emotional letter paying tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in which he recalled how the Indian leader had offered scholarships for his children while he was in jail.
On the social media platform ‘X’, he described former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as ‘instrumental in India emerging as one of the economic powers of the world’. Singh died on Thursday night in Delhi. He was 92 years old.
Ibrahim also called him ‘my friend, my brother, Manmohan’. Although Anwar rejected the offer, he was clearly impressed by the move. The Malaysian leader was jailed from 1999 to 2004. During this period Singh was the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
He wrote that Dr. Manmohan Singh was an honest, determined and strong leader and he has left behind a legacy that will inspire future generations.
He wrote, ‘He will be everything to me and even more. Many people don’t know this and now it’s time I share it with Malaysians: During my years of imprisonment he (Manmohan) showed kindness that was not required of him… He treated my children, especially my son , offered scholarship for Ihsan.
The Malaysian Prime Minister said that although I had rejected this wonderful offer. He wrote, ‘In those dark days when I was in the maze of imprisonment, he stood by me like a true friend. Such acts of quiet generosity define him and will always be engraved in my heart. Goodbye, my friend, my brother, Manmohan.
