A couple in Gujarat’s Surat got married at a police station after the groom’s family called off the wedding due to an alleged food shortage. The incident occurred at a wedding hall in Surat’s Varachha area on February 2.

As per a report by NDTV, the wedding was abruptly halted after guests complained about an alleged shortage of food. By that time, most of the wedding rituals had already been completed. While the groom’s family refused to proceed with the marriage, the groom, Pramod Mahto, was willing to go ahead with it.

The bride, Anjali Kumari, along with her family, approached the local police station for help. In response, the police summoned groom’s family and mediated the situation, ultimately arranging for the couple to complete their wedding rituals at the station.

The police donned the role of “baraatis”, and the wedding took place at 4:30 am on February 3.

Surat police also shared a video of Pramod and Anjali exchanging garlands and leaving the police station as husband and wife after completing the wedding rituals.

“Most of the rituals were completed. Only the exchange of garlands were left. The two families had an argument over an alleged shortage of food, following which the groom’s side refused to go ahead with the wedding,” NDTV quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alok Kumar as saying.

He further said, “The woman said Mahto is ready to proceed with the wedding but his family wasn’t agreeing.”

Since there was a risk of further conflict if the families returned to the wedding hall, the couple, originally from Bihar, completed the remaining rituals at the police station.

“The groom’s family agreed to continue the wedding after we helped them resolve the matter. The bride raised concerns over the possibility of a fresh fight if they returned to the marriage hall. So we allowed them to complete the rituals (exchange of garlands) and get married at the police station,” the DCP added.
