A Reddit user’s post about his sister being “kicked out” of a rented apartment in Gujarat because she is single has sparked widespread discussion and outrage online. In the post headlined “My sister got kicked out of her apartment for being single,” the user @smash_1048 described how his sister, a college student in Gujarat, was forced to leave a rented residence before she could move in.

The user explained that his sister had rented a 3 BHK apartment in Gandhinagar with two friends, paid the broker, and moved her belongings in. The broker had told them that renting as unmarried girls would not be an issue. She was simply waiting for the other two girls to arrive so they could sign the rental agreement.

“They had asked the broker beforehand that there won’t be an issue because we realise that people don’t want to rent to bachelor/etts and he said no problem. He will manage,” the post read.

But, a neighbour’s complaint to the builder led to the apartment being put “on notice,” and the builder refused to let them stay despite the landlord’s approval.

The user further mentioned that his sister attempted to speak with the neighbour, but he rudely disconnected. “My sister tried contacting the neighbour’s uncle to explain that they won’t cause any nuisance. She introduced herself and started talking when the guy just hung up on her. Then he blocked her everywhere,” the Redditor added.

Take a look at the post here:

The brother, who called the experience both disappointing and discriminatory, expressed frustration over the situation. “This is not just disappointing, it’s discriminatory. Now all the moving costs are on us and we have to do it a second time and also have to find a new place just before college starts. Why should young adults be it students or working be denied a place to live after everything is finalized just because of outdated societal biases?” he added.

This post quickly went viral, with many users sharing similar experiences. “I got kicked out of my apartment in Patna by my landlord who has been living in Mumbai for the last 15 years and never visits,” a user wrote. Another posted, “Being a bachelor is like being a 2nd class citizen in this nation.”

In a similar incident last year, a Bengaluru woman named Naina, 20, was rejected during a house hunt because of her age.
