A heart-wrenching video has emerged from the site of the Gambhira bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Vadodara district, showing a helpless mother desperately pleading for help as her son remained trapped inside a sinking car.
In the footage, she can be heard crying, “Maaro chokra doobi gayo” (“My child is drowning in the water”), as the vehicle plunged into the swollen Mahisagar River.
The family—comprising the mother, her husband, son, daughter, and son-in-law—was on their way to Bagdana when the bridge gave way. The mother, seated near the boot, managed to break the window and escape. Tragically, the car automatically locked, leaving the rest of her family trapped inside as it sank into the river, according to India Today.
Wednesday morning’s disaster claimed ten lives, including two siblings, and injured several others. Nine people were rescued from the scene after multiple vehicles fell into the river following the collapse of a four-decade-old section of the Gambhira bridge.
Superintendent of Police Rohan Anand said that the slab connecting two piers of the nearly 900-metre-long bridge collapsed, causing cars, vans, trucks, an auto-rickshaw, and a two-wheeler to plunge into the water.
Nearby vehicles were narrowly saved from toppling over and were swiftly moved to safety, Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya confirmed.
Gujarat’s Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, stated that a number of vehicles were on the bridge when it gave way, with at least five people rescued by emergency services. The bridge, inaugurated in 1985, had withstood decades of use before the failure, he added, and its collapse coincided with heavy rainfall in the district.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed grief over the tragedy and announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 4 lakh, respectively, to the next of the kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 as compensation to the injured.
