Bengaluru is often criticised for its poor roads, traffic congestion and potholes. A recent mishap in the city has once again sparked a debate on the same topic. A school bus carrying around 20 children had a narrow escape from a major accident on the Panathur–Balagere stretch in Bengaluru on September 12. While trying to overtake another school bus from the left, the driver lost control.
The road, already damaged by heavy rains, had large potholes and slush. One of the bus’s tyres sank into the ground, causing it to tilt dangerously to one side. The slushy, unstable road surface made the situation worse. Thankfully, nearby locals rushed to the scene and helped evacuate all children safely. No injuries were reported.
People Are Speaking Up About Road Safety
Many social media users reacted strongly to the incident. A person said, “Roads??? All the more reason for not overtaking from the left, endangering the lives of the children.” Another sarcastically wrote, “Space technologia.”
Others focused on the government’s failure to fix roads despite repeated complaints. “78 years of independence of India & this,” a user wrote.
Another said, “This road is a disaster with all major IT hubs, high-rise residential buildings, and a prominent international school. And now we see a school bus getting crashed. Govt needs to wake up.”
Comments kept pouring in. “Living quality of Bengaluru,” one remarked.
Another user blamed high taxes: “40% GST came into the picture.”
The outrage intensified as the video of the incident circulated online. Many highlighted that the road is a nightmare for daily commuters, particularly during the monsoon season, when heavy rains erode the surface and worsen potholes.
Following the incident, residents reportedly staged a protest holding placards that read, “Refund tax, we will build our city.”
This incident once again highlights the need for urgent government action to improve road safety in Bengaluru, particularly on stretches frequently used by school vehicles and pedestrians.
On September 9, a tragic accident occurred on National Highway-66 near Kulur in Mangaluru, where a woman riding a scooter lost her life after hitting a pothole and being struck by a lorry. The incident, captured on CCTV, happened while Madhavi, from Udupi, was on her way to work. Locals reportedly said this was the fifth fatality caused by that dangerous pothole.
