A British passenger, Jamie Ray Meek, shared a final Instagram video just moments before boarding the ill-fated Air India Flight AI171. The video, now widely shared on social media, captures a smiling Jamie Ray Meek at Ahmedabad airport saying goodbye to India and reflecting on his journey.
“We are at the airport just boarding. Goodbye India on a 10-hour flight back to London,” Meek says in the video, appearing calm and upbeat. As he chats with another person who briefly appears beside him, he adds, “My biggest takeaway is to not lose your patience with your partner,” followed by a gentle smile and the words, “Going back happily, happily, happily calm.”

Jamie Ray Meek was one of 53 British nationals onboard Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, which crashed just minutes after takeoff Thursday afternoon. The flight had departed at 1:38 PM, carrying 242 passengers and crew, including 169 Indian nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens and 1 Canadian national.
Ahmedabad Plane Crash: What We Know So Far
According to preliminary data, the aircraft lost altitude shortly after reaching around 825 feet, descending rapidly and crashing between 1 PM and 2 PM IST. Air India issued a brief statement confirming the incident and said more details would be shared as they emerge. A dedicated helpline has been set up at 1800 5691 444 to assist concerned relatives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “heartbreaking beyond words,” expressing his sorrow in a public statement, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.” He added that ministers and authorities are working on-ground to assist those impacted.
