A video of what looks like a woman stealing Halloween candies intended for children from homes in Canada has gone viral. The ‘stealing’ reportedly took place in the Cornell locality of Markham, Ontario. In the clip, the woman, who is dressed in a salwar kameez, is seen taking away sweets and emptying a bowl of treats left out for trick-or-treaters as she moves from house to house. The shocking incident was caught on camera during the Halloween night festivities, and it immediately garnered attention online.

The video was posted on X by media personality and host of The Faulkner Show Harrison Faulkner. “Trick or Steal spotted in Markham, Ontario last night. What is going on?” the post was captioned. Shared on November 1, the post has garnered over 5 lakh views.

The video opens with a woman walking up the steps of a house, putting all of the candy on a table into her bag. She then looks around for more that could be taken. As she walks down the steps, she steals a set of decorative lights that were hanging nearby. After putting everything into her bag, she walks away with her bicycle.

Social media users have responded to the video with a barrage of comments and reactions. A lot of people on the internet made assumptions about the woman’s ethnicity, while some said she was Indian. These claims, however, have not been validated.

Several viewers have found the video, which shows her methodically rifling candy dishes, to be both amusing and perplexing.

A person said, “Trick or Jeet!”

Another commented, “The lights too, that’s crazy. These people are incompatible with our level of civilization and societal morality.”

“She must’ve been confused and thought it was a food bank,” someone wrote.

“She just wants some lights for Diwali. Give her a chance,” another joked.

Halloween has its origins in ancient Celtic feasts and is observed on October 31 every year. As the harvest season came to a close and winter arrived, it was thought that the distinction between the realm of the living and the world of the spirits became less clear. People would wear costumes and ignite bonfires to ward off roving ghosts. To ensure that kids can still enjoy the celebrations even if no one is home to answer the door, families nowadays frequently leave bowls of candies outside their house for trick-or-treaters.
