The Ghibli trend has taken the internet by storm, as AI-generated images inspired by Studio Ghibli’s signature animation style flood social media. People everywhere are transforming their ordinary photos into dreamy, soft-toned illustrations reminiscent of films like Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro. While this trend has delighted many, it has also exposed some unexpected and eerie flaws in AI-generated imagery. One particularly bizarre incident has gone viral, highlighting the strange errors AI can make – mistakes that a human artist would likely never commit.
In this case, ChatGPT was asked to convert an image of women celebrating Chhath Puja, a popular festival in Bihar, into a Studio Ghibli-style artwork. The AI made a hilarious and spooky mistake in its interpretation.
The original photo depicted a group of women standing with baskets containing fruits, incense sticks and other ritual items, including a coconut used in worshipping the Sun God. However, when ChatGPT transformed the image into a Ghibli-style illustration, it mistook one of the coconuts for a human head. The final AI-generated artwork showed a woman on the left side of the image holding a basket with a severed-looking human head instead of a coconut.
The unsettling error left the internet in stitches, with many users joking about the unintended horror twist in an otherwise serene religious celebration.

This is not the first time AI-generated Ghibli edits have resulted in bizarre or spooky errors. Many users have reported mysterious figures appearing in their AI-generated images – figures that were not present in the original photos. This strange phenomenon has sparked curiosity and debate, with some dismissing it as a mere glitch, while others humorously speculate about ghostly presences.
One viral Instagram video features a group of eight women posing for a picture. But after applying the Ghibli filter, a ninth figure mysteriously appeared in the final image. The eerie anomaly left viewers bewildered, with the post’s caption calling ChatGPT a “ghost detector.”
Another Instagram user shared a similar experience. She uploaded a photo of herself with three friends, but when the Ghibli-inspired image was generated, an unknown fifth person appeared in the frame.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced that the image-generation feature, previously available only to premium users, is now accessible to all free users. As more people experiment with AI-generated Ghibli art, who knows what other spooky surprises might emerge?
