Celebrations in Pakistan
One video was shared by Preetam Devria, a Hindu resident of Pakistan, highlighting a Navratri event where participants dressed in traditional attire and danced with great enthusiasm. Another video from Karachi, posted by a user named Dheeraj, shows a similar gathering, with people joyfully taking part in the festivities.
These glimpses of Navratri across the border have delighted viewers worldwide. Social media users from India and beyond have flooded the comments with warm greetings and heart emojis, expressing happiness at seeing cultural traditions celebrated in Pakistan. Some viewers were curious about the Hindu community there. When asked if there were vegetarians and Jains in Pakistan, Devria confirmed that such communities do exist, sparking further interest and appreciation.
What is Navratri?
Navratri, dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, is one of Hinduism’s most important festivals. This year, it is being observed from 22 September to 2 October. The festival spans nine nights in the shukla paksha of the Hindu month of Ashwin, with each day devoted to a different manifestation of Goddess Durga.
From Maa Shailputri, symbolising peace and strength, to the fierce protector Maa Kaalratri, the nine incarnations, known as Navadurga, represent various aspects of feminine divinity and spiritual energy. The celebrations conclude with Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, which marks the triumph of good over evil.
Celebration beyond borders
The viral videos from Pakistan serve as a reminder of how festivals can transcend boundaries, fostering unity and cultural exchange. For many, seeing Navratri celebrated with such zeal in a predominantly Muslim country reflects the enduring power of tradition and the shared joy of festivities.
